La Vaquera means cowgirl in Spanish. This wine is a our cowgirl, it’s a wild and rich wine, borne out of a love of deep dark big berried varieties, a new and bold blend with little head for the traditional. The main vineyard source of this wines is from the hot northern reaches of the Calistoga AVA, a vineyard appropriately owned by the Swickard Family, renowned ranchers of Five Dot Farms. This wine is a blend of our richest, darkest and juiciest wines. Petite Sirah, Malbec and Petit Verdot and make up the main voice of the blend.
Our 2013 La Vaquera has a dark dense inky black/purple color with sumptuous legs and concentrated viscosity. In the nose it has a deep ripe cassis driven aroma. Blackberry and huckleberry compote, vanilla, caramel, strong black tea, cocoa and mocha characters meld together. Cherry cola, sweet cream, white tobacco and clove are layered in. In the mouth this wine is very generous with fruit flavors matching the nose. It has a beautiful gentle introduction that builds to a mouth filling silky texture. There is a lovely arc to the wine’s tactile experience in the mouth filled in with concentrated dark fruit and a lovely savory element balanced with a gentle acid which keeps the wine moving forward across the palate at once fresh and pleasing on the mouth. The wine is dry with a clean and lingering finish.
La Vaquera has been a joy to craft. I wish you “el mas grande de placer."
