Father's Day - Focus on Alpha Mare Red

My dad never met a stranger. He was just as comfortable talking to someone for the first time as he was to a family member or close friend. He used his understanding of personality styles to communicate in a way that was always well received. He had an amazing ability to be persuasive when he was sure he had the best path to a goal. He didn't take "no" or "I can't" for an answer. I've patterned myself after my dad and do my best to continue his engaging, out-going demeanor.
My dad shared his love of winemaking with me at an early age. We would drive to St. Louis, Missouri where Dad would physically inspect the grapes from Napa. The process of making wine and enjoying it has always been a labor of love surrounded by family and friends. When I started Red Mare Wines, I wholeheartedly adopted this passion. Today, I raise a glass of our Alpha Mare Red to my dad, Dr. Leon Striegel.

If you want to give the man in your life the cream of the crop, we suggest our Alpha Mare Red. This wine is Anne’s carte blanche and represents the best of her craft and experience in winemaking. The Cabernet Sauvignon base for our Alpha Mare Red hails from the Blossom Creek Vineyard in the Calistoga Appellation. With a sloping aspect providing consistent airflow and a slight northern exposure, this site is protected from extreme heat and produces exceptional quality grapes.
Barrel fermentation in small 225L oak barrels results in slower, cooler fermentation. The shape and size of the barrel produce a submerged cap. Gentle and consistent, this method of extraction gives mouth-filling, lush, and juicy tannin structure. The use of native yeast adds to the complexity, and a co-fermentation of Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec creates a round, vibrant, and pleasing wine with intense color and depth every year.

In our series to celebrate Father's Day, we turn to our very own Terri Striegel, who will tell us a little about her dad, and how he influenced her life.
"When I was a senior in high school, my dad did research on the best job opportunities for women. Knowing that I enjoyed math, he suggested that I study accounting in college. He knew that I approached situations in a very "black and white, no gray" manner down to the smallest detail. I am proudly the daughter of a Christian, army artilleryman."

Father's Day - Focus On Cabernet Sauvignon
My dad is here with my sister Karen Minton, our artist in residence, along with her red mare, many years ago.
Father's Day is just around the corner! My father was instrumental in my development as a winemaker. He always took time to understand us as kids, finding and exploiting our natural motivations and talents anytime he could. I think he saw it as life's most exciting puzzle - to raise kind, successful, and happy kids. In my case, he saw my interest in agriculture and my fascination with the local Washington wines he would bring home. My dad saw in me the talents and abilities required to make great wines.
I didn't have such interesting ideas for myself. I was planning on a career in dentistry, which wouldn't have been all bad! But, I have to say that I'm thrilled that my dad stepped in and suggested I look into the Viticulture & Enology Program at the University of California, Davis. It was a perfect puzzle fit! My dad knew me better than I knew myself and helped me to form a career and life which has flourished. I am ever grateful.
This Father's Day, show the important man in your life that you are ever grateful and let us send him some Red Mare Wine!

We source our fruit from organic or highly sustainable vineyards. Learn more about the vineyards we source from here. Once in the cellar, we use old-world methods, favoring technique over additives. We only use French oak, and we only use three coopers that we trust. Anne has traveled to their cooperages in France and feels confident in their consistency, sourcing, and quality.
