One Week Left for Memorial Day Pricing

There is only One Week Left in our Memorial Day Pricing Event. Stock up your cellar and make sure you have a little Red Mare to share.

The magic of Anne's winemaking style lies in the simplicity and framing of silky tannins, which her wines are known for. Anne reminds us not to pursue fads or heavy oak masking but to celebrate the site and the vintage in its own right. Her wines are elegant and balanced, excellent with food, and expressive of place. But, it is the magic of those silky tannins which identify Anne's style. "Designed to present a measure of austerity and refinement," is how James Laube puts it.

Until Memorial Day, head to our website to get Special Memorial Day Pricing on the Red Mare family of wines.

When you purchase 12 bottles, use Promo Code REMEMBER to add the benefit of $10/case shipping!

The King and Queen

Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are often referred to as the King and Queen of varietals. We agree, for so many reasons.
With our Memorial Day Pricing Event going on, this is a great time to stock your cellar with some Royalty...

Our Cabernet Sauvignon always has a beautiful wild cherry core. It shows off its lush red fruits as well as layer upon layer of complex characters underneath. You will always find that bright fruit and lovely acidity inter-twined with silky tannins in Red Mare’s Cabernet Sauvignon. James Suckling - 93 points

Since 2012, our Dutton Ranch Mill’s Station vineyard has produced a beautiful wine for us - bright and refreshing with forward fruit. This wine also expresses the depth and complexity that is derived from mature vines and traditional techniques.

Have You Met the Cowgirl?

If you love fruit-forward, big, rich wines, you have to try our La Vaquera.

When a bit of our Malbec, Petite Syrah, and Petit Verdot were left over after blending the Cabernet Sauvignon, we experimented by tossing them all together, creating a rich, inky and powerful "mountain" blend. It was so distinct and so delicious, that we decided to bottle it.

La Vaquera is "the cowgirl" in Spanish, and this wine is our little cowgirl. She isn’t following any rules. An untraditional blend and a bold character, this wine is always pushing the limits. The flavors and spiced texture are excellent when paired with smoked meats or wild game.

This wine hails mainly from the Swickard Vineyard in the northern reaches of the warm Calistoga AVA. Appropriately, it is owned by the founders of Five Dot Ranch, the well-regarded organic meat producer, and purveyor.

Listen to what Jeb Dunnuck had to say about our 2015 La Vaquera:
"As you’d expect given the blend, it’s a glass staining purple color and offers exotic, huge notes of blue fruits, graphite, flowers, and charcoal. Ripe, full-bodied, firm and angular on the palate, it packs tons of fruit and texture, is a terrific steakhouse red, and should keep for 10-15 years. 90 Points"

Until Memorial Day, head to our website to get Special Memorial Day Pricing on the Red Mare family of wines. We have to say, we feel the La Vaquera is a very good value at this price...

Missing the Kentucky Derby?

It would almost be Kentucky Derby time... This year, for the first time since WWII, the Kentucky Derby, is postponed. But, you don't have to wait to get in the mood! Join us in mixing up a Red Mare Sauvignon Blanc Mint Julep and watching this great YouTube Video of the Derby's Greatest Moments:

And, until Happy Hour comes, you can learn about our Red Mare, the horse that inspired the name of our brand. She was a racehorse. She never made it to the Derby, but she certainly won my heart.
My mission when buying her was to give an ex-racehorse a new life as a show and pleasure horse. I thought I could train her up and then sell her to a good home in a year or two, thereby giving me the funds to purchase another x-racehorse and give that horse a second chance. Well, if you know anything about red mares, you know that this didn't turn out as planned. Paradigm (as is her name) had a few things to teach me, and it has taken her 15 years to do so. She taught me more than I ever dreamed of teaching her, and she is now teaching young students the foundations of riding.
Get into the Derby mood with our twist on the traditional Mint Julep. With fewer calories and lower alcohol, it's a great summer sipper to pair with the Run for the Roses!

Red Mare Wine's Sauvignon Blanc, Mint Julep
1 Part Red Mare Sauvignon Blanc
1 Part Ginger Ale or Ginger Flavoured Sparkling Water
1/8 tsp Maple Extract (Vanilla can work as well)
Muddled Mind and Mint for garnish

Our Yountville, Gamble Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc grapes are certified CCOF Organic and farmed to exacting standards, this site yields a very low crop level, resulting in intensity and concentration.

Get to Know the Alpha Mare

We take an exceptional amount of pride in our Alpha Mare wines. That is because we take an extraordinary amount of care while producing them. With super small production levels, we can scrutinize every detail that goes into these wines.

We laboriously barrel-ferment our Alpha Mare Red, a co-fermentation of Cabernet Sauvignon with a bit of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Petite Sirah. This intensifies color, improves oak integration and creates complexity. We make our Alpha Mare White to age, modeled after the white wines of Bordeaux, this wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc clones and aged an extra year in special light-toast barrels from the Bertrange forest in France. This gives the wine exceptional depth and complexity.

Listen to what Master of Wine and Editor in Chief of The Wine Advocate, Lisa Perotti-Brown has to say about our 2015 Alpha Mare Red:
"...the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Alpha Mare is youthful with black and red currants, underbrush and black pepper notes plus wafts of bay leaves and cedar. Full, muscular, firm and chewy in the mouth, it has appealing freshness and an earthy finish. Give it a couple of years in bottle and drink it over the next 15+" (92+ points)

This wine has now had a few years stored in our optimal temperature-controlled cellar, and now it is ready for you.

The Kings & Queens

Royalty In The Cellar

Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay stand together as the leading varietals produced in California. In 2018 California wineries crushed just over 700,000 tons of Chardonnay grapes and 680,000 tons of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. That is a long way ahead of any other grapes trying to follow up behind; Zinfandel the closest at 400,000 tons and Pinot Noir, just over 300,000.

Why Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are such successes has been the subject of many a commentary. I think the answer is quite simple. These varieties are consistent, and they perform well in a variety of climates. They produce wines of depth, complexity, and interest while expressing their site in many lovely and surprising ways.

They also benefit from beautiful names and market awareness, which is quite recent. Two things happened in the mid 20th century, the market was growing post-WWII, and there was a growing sense of unease about using European region names. Frank Schoonmaker, a leading wine critic at that time, championed varietal labeling, and winemakers took note. They began to name their wines, not by the regions the wines were emulating, but the variety of grapes that produced those wines. These names were virtually unknown in the 1960s, and it must have felt very risky; like an uphill battle. As winemakers began the post WWII planting explosion, they didn’t always know the places that best suited each varietal. Over time and with booms and busts and replants, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay have stood the test, and the numbers show it.

Make sure you have some royalty in your cellar and acquire Red Mare Wines' Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Dutton Ranch Chardonnay today.

Library Wine Release

Along with many Napa Valley Vintners, we as opening our cellar and finding a few gems to share with our customers. Also, make sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter where we will be doing regular special pricing events and shipping promotions over the next month.

Have you ever dreamed of owning your own winery in the Napa Valley? Have you thought about tending to your vines in the California sunshine, getting up early to top up your barrels in a cold, damp cellar, popping a cork on a bottle of your own wine, and delighting in the aromas coming from the glass?

Jim Striegel has had a long history with wine and with the Napa Valley. While growing up in Illinois, his father purchased Napa Valley grapes, had them shipped across country, crushed, and fermented them in his basement. Jim grew up smelling the delicious aromas of fermenting wines emanating out of his basement. This began a life long relationship that has born much fruit.
During Anne Vawter’s early years in eastern Washington, she saw the wine industry growing up around her. With a father and uncle who had an appreciation and knowledge of wine, Anne’s interest naturally followed. With an agricultural background, the call of soil, sunshine, and a life producing an artisanal product was heard. This call led Anne to UC Davis, where she would gain the tools to realize her dream.

Jim and Anne’s paths crossed in 2006. A mutual friend introduced them, thinking that their complementary skills might lead to a good blend. In 2007, Anne and Jim began their journey together with the first vintage of Red Mare’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. They made less than 200 cases that first vintage, and while they have stayed small, they have slowly and diligently grown their business to include six beautiful wines that they are proud to stand behind.
Red Mare Wines’ focus is to produce unique wines from specific sites using organic or highly sustainable means. We employ traditional techniques to make wines with balance, age-ability, and grace.

Once a year, to celebrate our beginnings, we taste the past.  We dig deep in our cellar and find a small selection of library wines to share with our loyal customers. Purchasing library wines from the winery is always wise as the wines have been aged optimally in our temperature-controlled cellar since bottling. This year, we were particularly fond of our 2010, 2011 and 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.  There is a very limited quantity available, so act quickly and enjoy this unique vertical tasting experience.

Spring Wine Release

To our Loyal Customer,

We hope and pray that you are all well, safe and out of harms way.  The weather here in the Napa Valley is beautiful and we have the promise of an exceptional spring with which to begin the 2020 vintage.  We and our friends and family in California are sheltering in place due to the concerns around COVID 19.  Luckily, we are quite used to working from home and necessary winery operations continue without issue.

We hope to bring you a little joy during this crazy time!  To that end, we are continuing with our Spring Wine Release AND we are offering a little help on the shipping.

Sharing the wines that we lovingly make with our friends and family is the most satisfying thing that we do.  If you happen to use your time at home to make a delicious meal to go with a newly released Red Mare wine, please share a photo with us on Facebook or Instagram to receive a special promo code for your next order.
