La Vaquera means “cowgirl” in Spanish. This wine is our cowgirl, a wild and rich wine, borne out of a love of deep dark big berried varieties, a new and bold blend with little head for the traditional. The main vineyard source of this wines is from the hot northern reaches of the Calistoga AVA from a vineyard appropriately owned by the Swickard Family, renowned ranchers of Five Dot Farms. This wine is a blend of our richest, darkest and juiciest wines. Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot and Malbec and make up the main voice of the blend.
While 2015 was another dry year; late winter rains fully recharged the soil profile giving the vines an excellent push come spring. This balance between crop load and canopy allowed for dappled sunlight and encouraged the development of complex flavors. We would be even more grateful for the leaf cover during the sporadic but intense heat storms of September and October. We already expected a smaller vintage after three years of drought when cool temperatures extended bloom from a usual average of 10 days to almost 40 days in some vineyards resulting in an even lighter crop load. This smaller crop brought us an early harvest with wonderful concentration of flavor and lush mature tannins.
The 2015 is ripe black berries and currants, fruit compote, pie spices and caramel jump from the glass of this effusive wine. It fills your senses with dark fruits layered with more subtle and complex notes of tar, tobacco and fresh bread. In the mouth this wine had a powerful entry with firm tannins and ripe fruit balanced by a bright acidity that carries this wine to a long and dense finish.
